How good was it to be back at the SWAMPS field with such brilliant weather?

We had not been back in a while mostly due to the rain. Fortunately, this year the water eased up a bit and it allowed the place to dry enough for us to have a wonderful one-day competition at the field. In Bobby Hurst’s own words, “Look! Dust! We haven’t had dust here for over two years!”

We had a group of thirteen fliers. We flew the one flight line and got through 4 flights each with relative ease. The temperature was good enough to see some of the pilots out and about sporting their very fashionable shorts (a lot of hairy legs, let me tell you!).

The wind was almost non-existent for most of the morning. But it did pick up a bit after lunch. It was blowing a few of us in. Or for those of us who tend to “fly away” a bit, it was actually keeping us at the right distance.

The loan of the club field did not include any catering for lunch, so the honours fell to the VPA to provide food - but with teh friendly locals stepping in to help cook it!. There were some very good quality burgers and snags on that barbie! And even a couple of veggie burgers here and there.

Ben Biggs made the trip over from Bairnsdale with his new Sebart Wind S50e. He put in 4 magnificent flights to earn his second promotion point to Advanced and winning the category outright. A lot of 8’s and 9’s in those flights! I feel he has probably one more competition in Sportsman and that’s it. He’ll be making the Advanced pilots nervous there for a while.

Russell Edwards flew his newly acquired Aries very commandingly to win Advanced comfortably. He should be looking out his rear view mirrors, though. There’s this Biggs boy out of Bairnsdale that seems to be tailgating him closely!

Norm Parker’s YS powered Impression tore through the sky to first place in Expert, leaving Bobby and Henry eating dust in the distance (did I mention there was dust at SWAMPS?).

And Bill Bloodworth resumed his spot at the front winning F3A in front of Dennis, Fernando and David.

Overall, we had a very relaxed Sunday competition where everybody flew without incidents and had some good, well deserved fun.

Our next outing is an APA event: The APA Championship at Albury on October 1 & 2. We are all trying to book the Albury Classic Motel. Get your entries to the CD asap.
